Blackheads are the result of a build up of sebum (oil that is manufactured by the body) in pores anywhere on the body where there are sebaceous glands, mostly found on the face, neck, back, and chest areas. When the sebum is exposed to air it turns the dark color you see just below the surface of the skin within the pores.

Oily skin and pollutants in the air are the main causes of blackheads and if not cleansed regularly can get infected and become inflamed leading to severe acne.

Here you will find some home remedies for blackheads that you can try before resorting to more drastic measures. Before using any home remedy for blackheads it is always a good idea to open up the pores by gently washing with a cleanser or mild soap, or you can try steaming the area to open up the pores.

Fresh lemon or lime juice dabbed on the affected areas 2 to 3 times a day helps to cut through the oil and loosen it making it easier to remove from the pores.

Lemon and lime juices can also be mixed with other ingredients to make home remedies for blackheads such as:

  • Fresh lime juice with a glass of boiled milk
  • 1 tsp. fresh lime juice with 1 tsp. groundnut oil (peanut oil)
  • Fresh lime juice and ground drumstick (moringa) pods and leaves
  • 1 tsp lemon juice and 1 tsp finely ground cinnamon powder
  • Lemon juice, salt and honey, yogurt (optional)—mix together and gently scrub into affected area for several minutes, rinse off and dry

Other home remedies for blackheads include:

  • ¼ cup of hot water, 1 tsp Epsom salts and 4 drops of iodine mixed together, let cool and apply to affected area, let dry and then rinse off
  • Fresh fenugreek leaves ground into a paste, applied and left on overnight then rinsed off
  • Mix ground radish seeds with water to make a paste
  • Red sandalwood and turmeric mixed with milk and made into a paste
  • Green tea facial scrub
  • Grated potatoes made into a poultice and applied
  • Almond powder mixed with rose water
  • Warm honey applied to blackheads
  • White of eggs beaten
  • 3 tbsp of honey and 1 tsp cinnamon made into a paste. Apply at night and rinse off in the morning
  • 1 ½ cup of hot water with ½ tbsp of boric powder. Dab on continually for awhile and then rinse off
  • Mint juice with turmeric powder. Leave on for 15 to 30 minutes and rinse off
  • Tender neem leaves and turmeric powder made into a paste
  • A pinch of table salt and a small soft piece of glycerine soap. Apply and rinse off.

All skin types are not the same and do not respond the same way to any given treatment. So while trying these home remedies to get rid of blackheads don’t be discouraged if one of them do not work. Keep trying and eventually you will find one that works best for you.
